Brittany Merrill Underwood

Akola Project
President & Founder
Brittany grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and earned her BA at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. In 2004, Brittany spent the summer in Uganda and met Sarah, a Ugandan woman with a vision for orphans in her country. In 2006, Brittany founded an organization to build an orphanage with the capacity for 180 children to house the orphans that slept on Sarah’s floor. Once the orphanage was completed, in 2007 Brittany launched the Akola Project in Eastern Uganda to empower women to uplift the spiritual and physical livelihoods of their families and communities through economic development. In 2008, she expanded the scope of the project to help women in war-torn communities in Northern Uganda generate income to restore their communities. Brittany has been featured both nationally and internationally on CNN for her work in Uganda and was honored by clothing manufacturer Levi as one of 50 women around the globe who have changed the political, cultural, and spiritual shape of the future. She won the distinguished Emerging Leader Award from her alma mater Southern Methodist University in 2013 and has been asked to join the elite 2014 mentoring class for the Laura Bush Women’s Initiative. Brittany leads the Akola Project as Founder and President and implements strategic visioning in Uganda and the US as the organization continues to grow.
